Former U.N. Assistant Secretary General to Speak at ORU
(Tuesday, February 16th, 2010)

Tulsa, Okla. – Gillian Martin Sorensen, formerly U.N. assistant secretary-general for external relations, now senior adviser and national advocate at the United Nations Foundation in New York, will be giving a presentation titled “Facing the Crises of Our Times: the U.S. and the U.N. in the 21st Century” at Oral Roberts University Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. in Zoppelt Auditorium. Her lecture will focus on the relationship between the United Nations and the United States. Before going to the United Nations Foundation, Sorensen served the United Nations as assistant secretary-general for external relations on appointment by Secretary-General Kofi Annan. She was responsible for outreach to nongovernmental organizations and was the contact point for the Secretary-General with parliamentarians, the academic world, religious leaders and other groups committed to peace, justice, development and human rights. Prior to that, Sorensen served from 1993 to 1996 as special adviser for public policy on appointment by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. Her duties included directing the U.N.’s global Fiftieth Anniversary observances in 1995 and the coordination of the UN50 Summit in which 180 presidents and prime ministers participated. She is an experienced public speaker and often represented the World Organization in this country and abroad. Sorensen spent over 12 years (1978-1990) on appointment by Mayor Edward I. Koch as New York City Commissioner for the United Nations and Consular Corps, head of the city’s liaison with the world’s largest diplomatic community.
